I had a good workout yesterday and am feeling the effects today. My muscles are sore, but in a good way. You know the feeling! It’s when your body says, “Hey! You worked hard and used some muscles that you forgot about and got them working again. Good job! Keep it up and you will grow them even stronger!” It reminded me of how I feel sometimes after an intense conversation (a.k.a. fight) with Ernie.
When I am using all of my effective communication skills, when I am being patient, loving and compassionate, it is hard work! It is much easier to get lazy and throw out the sarcasm, innuendos or give in. Yet when I do use all of the skills I have learned and am continuing to learn and when I apply what I know a fight can turn into an intense conversation about what we love, our values and where we are going. We are passionate about what we are saying and more conscious of how we say it. As we find alignment, we are able to move forward together rather than drift apart. And the next day, I feel the muscles growing stronger and holding us together tighter.
When I learned new skills over the years as a manager, I always loved coming back and applying them with my staff. They often looked at me like I was a bit crazy. I would say and do things that were different than what they were used. Some ideas we kept, others we threw out, but in the end we all grew stronger together as a team by working our muscles. One of the key ones I know worked well and was important to my team was “Bucket Filling”, and opportunity to fill each other’s buckets’ up with positive feedback at the beginning of a staff meeting. That ‘crazy’ idea stuck even after I stopped leading staff meetings and served to build a strong team.
I lead a full life full of love, adventure and growth. Check out my latest thoughts here.
